Mastodon

Also Fediverse

Free, open-source decentralised microblogging software: many independently run servers that communicate through ActivityPub, part of the "Fediverse".

Mastodon works much like X (formerly Twitter), but no single company controls it: each server sets its own moderation rules and content policies, and users registered on one server can still follow and reply to accounts on others.

The "Fediverse" (a blend of "federation" and "universe") refers to all the social services that can pass posts to one another through a common protocol; Lemmy is also part of it. This site reads the public hashtag timelines of several French-language servers, so it sees only posts that carry a hashtag and have reached those servers.
