Lemmy

Also jlai.lu

Free, open-source forum software similar to Reddit, run on independent servers that talk to each other via ActivityPub. jlai.lu is a French-language instance.

Lemmy lets anyone run their own discussion site (called an instance), and instances communicate with one another through the ActivityPub protocol. It is part of the "Fediverse" and uses the same protocol as Mastodon.

The French-language instance this site reads, jlai.lu, has very little discussion volume, but it shows a user base different from Reddit's. Lemmy comments carry a "score" (upvotes minus downvotes), which is noted when they are quoted.
