I was taken off the street, driven first to the ТЦК, then to Khmelnytskyi for the military medical board, then brought to barracks and told to wait, that tomorrow I'll have interviews. Any advice on what to do?

Note: ВЛК: the military medical board that rules on fitness to serve. The "interviews" are units recruiting from new conscripts.

Write an autobiography. Who you are, what you can do, education, skills. Bad habits, relatives in Russia if any.

Recruits write autobiographies in an organised way, on approved forms, but yes, you must state education and speciality, because it's one of the key fields unit representatives look at when choosing people. Relatives abroad (not just in Russia) mean a 90% chance of not getting training abroad.

Have you passed the ВЛК already, what status did you get? If it's fit for service in the rear (abbreviated), combat units won't take you.

Eyesight -12 is still fit. Below that they might discharge you, but who am I kidding. The ВЛК is a brutal sham. Did anyone have blood taken for a general analysis? Our whole army is a fucking Soviet relic, and we're very lucky the katsaps are an even bigger Soviet relic, which is why they aren't yet walking the streets of fortress Lviv.

"Fit" and "fit for the rear" both sound like fit, but in fact these two verdicts decide your fate in the army better than any recruiter or ТЦК chief.

Most aren't searched for, there aren't the resources, and they won't break doors. People who go AWOL usually get caught through stupidity or carelessness, somewhere on the street etc.

Almost all 6,000 buildings left without heating after the enemy attack on Kyiv's critical infrastructure on 9 January are already reconnected. City services keep repairing damage 24/7 to provide Kyivans with the necessary services. About 50 buildings are being restored now. […] If so, then they're elephants! (I mean the energy workers, not the officials)

Note: The first paragraph relays Mayor Klitschko. "Elephants" is slang for "awesome". Most Kyiv homes rely on district heating from combined heat and power plants.

Yeah, "almost". My building is considered connected to heating, but the radiators are either completely icy (usually at night, when it's -17) or slightly warmer than zero, purely so the pipes don't freeze. In fact there's no heating, on paper there is

Are you all damn blind that this country's government is busy shifting responsibility onto others? Instead of holding Zelensky to account, you all sit and bitch about the city's mayor.

Okay. Why did Zhytomyr and Kharkiv manage to keep infrastructure (critical at least) powered with 22 times (90 billion Kyiv, about 4 billion Zhytomyr) and 4 times (20 billion Kharkiv) fewer hryvnias respectively? Kyiv has money up to the roof, but instead of bonuses for energy workers they're relaying pavements here (the most obvious example).

Except that in almost all buildings newer than 2005-2010 and high-rises, the heating pumps are in the building itself and they are, surprise, electric. And there's no electricity now even in the most trouble-free districts for at least 10-12 hours a day. So no heating either.

"Maybe you use some long-term insurance programmes, non-state pension funds, or opened a special account just for old age?" What is the point of all this if it doesn't even cover inflation?! All the hryvnias you put aside won't cover even a year of a pensioner's life in 30 years!

    2. up7j●●●

Normal investments beat inflation even after taxes. "Hryvnias put aside" are not an investment, nor is any other currency; all currencies have inflation

A Ukrainian IT worker never thought and doesn't think about a pension, because then he would have to invest a large part, if not half, of his salary in something. I remember myself well when I worked in Ukraine: no thoughts of a pension at all, plans to buy a flat, a car, travel, buy various gadgets. Any thought of a pension would immediately have taken that away from me and I'd have had to cut my appetites a lot. I was silly, or maybe not, who knows... it works out differently for everyone.

Want to make God laugh, tell him your plans for tomorrow. Since 2013 Ukraine has had at least 5 black swans: Maidan 2, the ATO, the election of the Mightiest, Covid, the full-scale invasion of 2022, which multiplied a hell of a lot by zero. So the investment plan is very simple: don't die in poverty, everything else is details

Almost every day a post tries to sneak in with provocative topics, mobilisation videos from brand-new accounts, yet in decent Ukrainian. […] But bots really exist and they are the MAJORITY of posts about the ТЦК. […] The reality is that mostly 30-40-year-old men are mobilised, who have never heard the word Reddit, let alone know how to post here. […] It would be quite logical to ban all zero-karma accounts or ones with hidden history that tell cool stories about mobilisation and distort the discussion here.

Note: The poster says he moderates another subreddit.

are there russkies pushing the ТЦК topic? yes are the videos they use real? real should we now keep quiet about the ТЦК because the russkies might pick it up? no the russkies can pick up any fuck-up and blunder of our government, but that doesn't mean that when you start talking about it you're an enemy and a psyops guy. So we talk about the ТЦК's atrocities. Empty accounts are used by our own government too. And something you didn't think of: people are afraid to write about ТЦК atrocities from their main accounts because the SBU will come for them. (as it already has for bloggers and ordinary people)

Leaving the country at 22 in 2026

    ▲Post▼

In a month I turn 23. Is it worth leaving the country with under $500 in my pocket and practically no acquaintances abroad, and how risky is it? I have bachelor's and master's degrees in programming. English level A2. […] Basically I have two options: either go to some Germany and go through a long adaptation (+ I still need to find 3 proofs of residence in Ukraine) or stay in Ukraine and in 2 years have a job with a deferment, if the war doesn't end.

Note: At 23 a man no longer qualifies for the exit permission for 18-22-year-olds.

Not risky at all. Go with God and don't come back. It'll be better there, here there's war and the ТЦК. You don't need it. When the war comes to Europe, you'd better defend it. There everything is for the people, and here it's corruption and cattle

In a month only one of your two options will remain. The choice should be obvious ;) More and more countries are tightening temporary protection, today I read they plan to send refugees to Rwanda so as not to breed them at home — are you sure you want that? Jump on the last carriage! Without the language it'll probably be hard to get a job, especially without experience. But you can always pick strawberries in Belgium!

Even if the war ends (and it won't in the coming years) nothing good will be here. Lawlessness and corruption will stay after the war too. Leave while you're young. At 23 you'll adapt easily and learn the language (any). I think by 30 you'll have citizenship of some normal country. So look for a place with a future.

I have commercial work experience and try to keep up with modern tech. If I knew clearly that during the war I wouldn't be thrown into a trench but my professional experience would be fully used, I'd be much calmer.

Yeah, sure. We look for people for months even for simple positions, at normal salaries, because demand is growing; salary expectations in the junior-middle segment are back at 2021 levels. Of those who can do anything, only the most idealistic will work for 1.5k, most want 2.5+ while not knowing the subject area (those who do have long been working)

Maybe we live in different realities, but in my case IT people worked for 20k under blackmail and threats. And electronics engineers had their reservations drop because of countless "bugs", after which they were bused off at the factory gate the same day. And now "there's nobody to work".

Note: "20k" means 20,000 hryvnias (about $480). "Busiaryty": to bundle someone into a recruitment van.

Decide for yourself what you want in life. Just one thing: don't count on the war ending. If you can't do anything useful here (and don't want to learn), and you're afraid to defend, then run and find yourself a country that doesn't mobilise during a war :D

why Europe? sooner or later they'll send men back here, because they're interested in Ukrainians specifically fighting Russia. at heart they're the same imperialists as the moskals and the yanks, just more politically correct. there's no reason at all to go to Lyakhostan (and bring them economic benefit there). you can go to South America.

Yes, there is a point. I recently made the same choice, also 21 and also Munich via the airport. […] It's not as scary and bad here as most commenters write, all the prospects are here, and ordinary Germans are still incredibly supportive on a personal level, much more than Ukrainians in Ukraine. […] The main thing is to learn the language practically and then everything will be fine with work, and while you study the state will fully pay for food, transport, entertainment and a flat with utilities, + there will be social workers to help with all the documents.

Munich does accept. I say this because I live here and have a friend who works at a refugee camp. But there are very few places. There isn't even enough ordinary housing, the highest rents for ordinary housing in all of Germany, never mind refugee camps.

No, there is no point going. It won't be easier, and you'll get a pile of other problems typical for migrants. […] So if you want to "sit out the war", the best option is to buy 30-50 ares of land, a house in a village (even in Zhytomyr region, they have power almost all the time), buy a little tractor and calmly grind money and resources in the holiest peace... […] Or else go to the ends of the earth, quickly burn all your savings, end up with nothing and work for pennies at McDonald's like a slave, poor and homeless... But you'll give everything to the Germans!!!

Why are most Ukrainian IT workers "homeless"?

    OP

It really baffles me. Incomes are supposedly among the highest in the country (among "mere mortals"), yet four out of five colleagues live "under bridges", in rented flats. And it is not about the war or the ТЦК, because some have been in dev for 10 to 15 years. […] Meanwhile my non-IT acquaintances, working as engineers/mechanics/taxi drivers/doctors with matching incomes, mostly managed to save up for their own roof. […] Honestly, I don't understand at all how one can live in someone else's home for longer than an average holiday. You are nobody there and have no rights to anything. You can't hammer in a nail, throw out an old wardrobe or adapt the wiring for the blackouts.

I am a bomzh, and the maths is on the side of renting. If your money isn't lying under the mattress, buying a home is almost always a bad financial decision. Unless you buy to let, then yes. "four out of five colleagues live under bridges in rented flats" With me it's the opposite: 4 out of 5 bought flats in instalments from the developer. As soon as income reached $3k (galley senior level) and above, they saved and bought. Regardless of kids/family/girlfriend/boyfriend, really all the sensible ones bought. They paid off the new build in 2 years, another year for renovation. But that was 5 to 10 years ago. Now I don't know, because I no longer work with Ukrainians (I think it is logical not to invest in property while there is a war (I sold both my flats in the last 1.5 years)

There is no great mystery here, a whole range of reasons. — We never had normal home-buying instruments like those "in the West" and some other countries. — Mortgages at 20-30%?

Ukraine prepares to review its list of "migration risk" countries

Ukraine is preparing to review the list of "migration risk" countries, which sets the rules for foreigners' entry and legalisation. This could partly simplify importing labour amid staff shortages. […] "They come in, get documents, and then migrate further. It's a problem that creates obstacles for business," the head of the President's Office stressed. […] It includes certain countries of Asia and Africa, among them Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Pakistan, 70 countries in total.

Note: The opening post relays a delo.ua report; the head of the President's Office it quotes is Budanov.

Of course they'll use Ukraine as a transit. Why would they need a beggar country with an average of 500 bucks when nearby there are lots of countries with an average of 1,000 and more and better welfare?

I've been seeing the topic of migrants from India and Bangladesh in my social media feed more and more. And you can see the posts are similar and the photos 100% AI-generated. The accounts are shady too. So clearly the topic is being pushed deliberately. But what interests me is that there's no smoke without fire. So have they really brought them in somewhere already, or are they just stirring people up for now? Share info. Because I haven't seen a single migrant myself yet.

There have always been migrants: in the 90s loads at markets and in under-the-table jobs, many different students at universities, etc. It's just more painful now, because there are far fewer native people, the war, busification and other shit. And the cattle in the country's leadership at every level don't help with proper communication. Anyway, we'll have to see in a couple of years; right now it's clear there won't be millions of them.

Your suspicions are right. The topic of migrants and fanning fears about them is a topic of right-wing organisations in Europe, which are often inspired by Russia. […] Same with Ukrainian society. I'd formulate the message like this: "the Ukrainian man goes to the front, and instead of him they bring in Bangladeshis who fuck Ukrainian girls and breed here". I.e. the message must rock society, be based on a real problem, and be emotionally embellished […] And lo and behold, you can see this exact message in the comments here :)

My main point is that if you claim "migrants are being brought in en masse", show numbers. One of the links literally says "10 migrants were invited". Not 10 thousand, but 10. […] The modern economy of countries, for example Europe, cannot work without a constant inflow of migrants, how about that? Ask economists if you don't believe me.

What do we do if most of the workforce has gone abroad or is fighting at the front? Do you have better options than immigration? Force all women to work 5 jobs to meet the state's economic needs? Send girls to the mines and building sites too? I understand women also work physically demanding jobs, but most aren't suited to them at all and we won't fill the labour need with them. Fucking russian bots

Just do as normal countries do: you came and you only work, no paths to citizenship for labour migrants, none at all, the slightest breach of the law and deportation + a lifetime entry ban, that's it, they should be here exclusively as seasonal workers

Well, overall there won't be as many as they paint, few will want to come to a country where you can drop dead from russian rockets before you reach work. But will assimilation work? I think not, we have different religion and culture. Coexist and find a compromise? Questionable, but probably; a lot depends on where the migrant is from and how much he respects the country and people he wants to work with...

Assimilation depends not on cultural similarity but on the environment a child grows up in. If a child grew up surrounded by Ukrainian, studied at a Ukrainian school, had Ukrainian friends all through growing up, they probably won't particularly identify with another country's culture

Lolfuck. Indians are like cockroaches and you've probably never crossed paths with them in life. If they like it here, there'll be no more room for Ukrainians. Especially with the current demographics, where our young and active population has bolted and shrunk catastrophically. Those Indians will simply take everything, university places, working trades, jobs like barista/shop assistant/cleaner.

The monthly pass price is stupid. Totally disproportionate. If you take the 46 trips, it's just about acceptable. But it would be nice if this price at least included transfers. Because you might change to a trolleybus, ride only 3 stops, and it already hits your pocket

30 hryvnias to ride the metro and trams begged from the Poles, how mighty. I predict people will ride without tickets and revenue and profit will fall. I'm not against a rise. But sitting in a tram that's +50 in summer and leaks down the walls when it rains, for 6.50, ok. For 30? Now the optimists will come running to say that in a couple of years new vehicles and routes will appear, but let's not lie to ourselves.

Note: "Mighty" mocks a government buzzword. Some of Kyiv's trams are second-hand vehicles from Poland.

The problem is that Kyiv's public transport has been run into the ground for years. Prices are high because costs are high, costs are high because of low efficiency and the war. Now it's a death spiral where the lack of money worsens public transport (fewer routes, longer intervals, smaller fleet, shoddy repairs...) and then when the money runs out completely prices rise again and it all continues.

      1. Didn't know Warsaw had such a cheap pass 2. In the EU transport is very expensive, even relative to high salaries it comes out unpleasant 3. For me personally the prices are fine 4. I'm for market prices in all spheres (utility tariffs etc.), in transport they can be a bit lower. But right now 6.5 hryvnias (with 50 trips) is very little.

Many compare the new prices in Kyiv with Lviv, like it's 30 hryvnias there and Kyivans have got spoiled. […] A large part of Kyiv's residents, maybe most of them, now get to work roughly like this: marshrutka from home to the metro, the metro to the right district, a marshrutka from there to work. […] Right now that costs 15-20 hryvnias per marshrutka and 8 for the metro, i.e. 38-48 hryvnias, one and a half to two times more than the same route in Lviv with a Leokart.

Note: Leokart is Lviv's transit smart card, with transfers allowed within 40 minutes.

There are no more transfers in Lviv. And before they only allowed 1-2 transfers, not "any number" as you say. Private operators didn't want to introduce the Leokart system but the city forced them, literally said "you don't install it, you don't run". It took about half a year, so I think it can be introduced in Kyiv too.

As for private operators, it'll be very hard here. And the authorities don't really want to do it themselves […] I'm not saying it's impossible, but it will take a few years. Provided someone takes it on, because with our city authorities they're more likely to just not bother.

Kyiv's administration has lost its mind. […] The fare is inadequate given the quality of our metro and citizens' income. […] And the monthly pass is absurdly expensive. […] 3,656 hryvnias. What the fuck is this? […] For comparison, Scandinavian countries are known for expensive metros. A monthly pass in Stockholm converted into hryvnias costs ~~4500~~ (UPD: checked, now it's about 4,900). […] incomes in Stockholm are much higher than Kyivans'. […] This is fucked up.

Rich countries encourage public transport so people don't drive in the city and whine that roads need widening and parking spaces need scraping together somewhere. But here, when an ordinary person doesn't have enough for the metro, he'll have to eat less but still buy the same metro tickets.

First: until September I'll use the old trips. Second: I'll look for a job closer to home (I quit my job, but not because of transport). Third: if it's further from home, preferably with a route where I could buy a scooter and ride to work and back. Seriously, I'd rather buy a scooter in instalments for 15,000-20,000 hryvnias than burn money. At least I'll have a scooter. Plan B, if everything fails: I know a student.

Note: "I know a student" hints at using a student's discounted pass.

I'm already pretty frugal, I do laundry and power-hungry things after 23:00 when the 50% tariff applies. I eat modestly, pasta, buckwheat, today there was fillet on discount at Silpo. I don't smoke. I thought of getting a pet but I'll wait for now and see how expenses go. I see you've already optimised at your place 😁

Note: Posted by the thread starter. Silpo is a Ukrainian supermarket chain.

What's profit got to do with it? It should earn enough for its own maintenance and development. If transport doesn't pay for itself, it promotes nothing at all, it just carries pensioners and schoolkids at the expense of working people and falls apart in the process.

It shouldn't. Transport in a metropolis is subsidised by definition, because it serves other goals. That's exactly why private companies don't usually build it

I'm against too. Conditions should be made so that a person goes by himself. It shouldn't be that you take your passport and leave as a refugee. You don't fulfil any duties, you have basic rights like any person. P.S. There is no state in the world where enough volunteers can be gathered to defend it. That's why states invented mobilisation

How? The likes of you, right after telling everyone "those who want to be Russians can go to Moscow and leave Ukraine alone...", simply closed the borders. I.e. you say "go away, nobody's keeping you", and when they answer "ok, I'm leaving" you immediately switch to "no no, not allowed, how can you go to Russia? You can't!".

I just don't understand, our constitution clearly states that everyone is equal and there can be no gender discrimination. Also Ukraine isn't just fighting somewhere, it's fighting for its existence. In Israel this question doesn't even exist, all genders fight equally, and that's while they don't face the question of whether Israel survives Women should be mobilised, even if not into the infantry, not to the front, not as drivers, but at least fill all the non-combat posts

It reminds me of, let's say, "spiteful" feminism. E.g. when society punishes men and women differently for the same crimes, cannibalistic feminism demands raising women's punishments to men's level. Normal people just demand softening punishments, abolishing "victimless crimes" etc. Here we face petty machismo, "let's put the broads in the trenches too", instead of what normal people say: "people belong to themselves", not to the bosses, the homeland, etc. Meh...

    Attitudes to mobilising women

    ▲Post▼

Former Ukrainian defence minister Reznikov said he supports the mobilisation of women. […] "If we really want to solve this problem, we need to look at the successful experience of countries that have it. The closest to us today in terms of the level of threat is the state of Israel... There women serve in the army, everyone just like men," says Reznikov. […] What do you think?

Note: The post includes a poll: support mobilising women on equal terms / support with lighter terms / don't support / undecided.

Reznikov is a devil, but the idea itself isn't bad. Those against mobilising women, what are your arguments? From the Constitution's point of view men and women have equal rights. So duties should be equal too. I'd especially like to hear the arguments of those women who for 4.5 years, rolling between Europe and Ukraine, actively supported the mobilisation of men on social media and generally wanted to fight to the 1991 borders. With other people's hands, of course.

Note: "The 1991 borders" are Ukraine's borders at independence, including Crimea and Donbas.

I'm against, because my wife has been raising 2 kids for the 5th year, carries the household, works, sometimes helps me, because a soldier's pay is less than hers as a kindergarten teacher. If they start mobilising women, the ТЦК cocks will drag them into the buses by force too and hold them in basements and who knows what else? And the kids where? An orphanage? Or sold abroad? It's enough that at 22 I did something stupid and didn't leave, but went into the army. I've talked to those who came to us via the bus and the ТЦК basement; they have little motivation to do anything for the country, let alone for the current government!

I don't believe there will be equal conditions; there will be harassment, rapes, condescending attitudes, harder promotion due to sexism, lack of necessary hygiene products, etc. I.e. if the army is a lousy place for men, for women it will be either twice as hard or fucking hell, at least if they just start busing everyone equally. Equal conditions on paper and equal conditions in practice are not the same thing. So my opinion is: first truly equalise the conditions, then think about mobilising women. Edit: Unless you make purely female units, maybe it would be ok, but there must be hygiene products and painkillers, because sometimes it hurts so much that if I had something to shoot myself with and no painkillers, I would have

You're funny, of course; don't you understand what ailments men are mobilised with? The cross-eyed, the lame, heart patients, stroke survivors, and everyone somehow doesn't give a fuck, but periods, yes, that's a reason! I'd have had no objection at all, but when they mobilised an acquaintance of mine who had shoved 20 nerve blocks into his back just to walk, your arguments about periods are, to put it mildly, funny.

Fully confirm. I saw women assault troopers and a woman artillerist with my own eyes. They had no problems at all. But I did come across some very nasty female medics with the philosophy "why are you whining, I'm a woman and I don't whine, and you do". In the army everything depends on upbringing and discipline, not sex.

I think for former politicians there should be mobilisation after 60, and definitely into the 425th assault battalion. The four-eyed moron waited until he turned 60 and started crowing about mobilisation.

I'm categorically against mobilising women who have at least one child or are pregnant I'm also categorically against restricting the exit of pregnant women or women with at least 1 child. BUT I consider radically unfair the situation where a childless 25-year-old woman can travel freely, live her best life, carry no burdens, go to work in the EU and Dubai, swim in the ocean with tags #FairytaleLife, while her 25-year-old peer, classmate or brother must immediately go to pay his debt to the homeland, risk everything, or be useful to society in some other way to get a reservation and be locked in for an unknown number of years. Everyone should be useful now. If we've locked in the boys, we should lock in the girls too; let them work here, there aren't enough people, support the economy, work in critical infrastructure and defence enterprises. Nobody will put girls in assault regiments, but there should be some adequate social justice.

Hi. My wife and I are Ukrainian citizens; since the start of 2026 we have lived in Czechia under Temporary Protection and rent a flat here. We both keep working remotely as Ukrainian group-3 sole traders (ФОП), get paid into Ukrainian accounts, but physically do the work from Czechia. […] I'm especially interested in the experience of those who kept their Ukrainian ФОП but live permanently and work remotely from Czechia.

Note: ФОП: a Ukrainian individual entrepreneur (sole trader), the usual status for IT contractors. OSVČ is the Czech self-employed status. Temporary Protection is the EU residence status for Ukrainian refugees.

Better talk to a lawyer of the country where you will definitely end up living, rather than ask on an entertainment forum "do we become Czech tax residents for 2026" You can't just become a tax resident of another country, nor lose your previous tax residence

If you have temporary protection, yes, you do. You can skip paying taxes and filing returns, but in 2-3-5 years a request from the tax office will arrive, and at best there will be back taxes + interest. Tax crime is considered serious in EU countries. […] 1. If you stay more than 183+ days in total in Czechia, you become a tax resident.

    3. uaxv●●●

But if you have rented a flat, your centre of vital interests is already in Czechia and it will be hard to prove otherwise to a tax inspector. They may not bother you for a year, two, three, then an audit for all the years lands. We got an audit covering 3.5 years (2023 to 2026 inclusive).

    4. uhfo●●●

      1. Where you live, there you pay taxes and work by their laws. I.e. you moved to Czechia, so you pay taxes there and open their equivalent of a ФОП. 2. A ФОП is not covered by the double taxation treaty. […] 4. Yes, for 2026 you are definitely a Czech tax resident, because it is already more than half a year.

Note: A commenter's view, not professional tax advice.
    5. u5wx●●●

Register a local sole trader. Move the contract to Czechia. Close the Ukrainian ФОП. Start paying everything in Czechia. […] If you plan to stay in the EU going forward, just stop breaking the rules and close all your affairs in Ukraine.

I'm just curious to hear your opinion. No negativity, judgement or attempts to prove anyone is doing right or wrong. […] Many people are thinking about leaving now, especially at our age, so I wonder what made you stay: family, work, relationships, studies, you don't see yourself abroad, or you just don't want to start from scratch?

This post reminds me of those classic Ukrainian questions, "why don't you drink (alcohol)?" When what isn't and shouldn't be the norm is presented as the norm, while the normal people for some reason have to justify themselves. You left, so sit quietly over there and don't bother those living at home ._.

Note: "Contract 18-24" is Ukraine's one-year enlistment contract for volunteers aged 18 to 24. "Pilot" means drone operator.

The 18-23 law was passed when I was 21 (almost 22). I thought and hesitated for a long time, but... I have a good job with good prospects. All my acquaintances abroad do physical work (not great for my health) or ask their parents for money. I took all this as an investment: higher risk = higher return (however strange that sounds in the context of staying in Ukraine). So I'm 23 now and still in Ukraine, growing, donating and believing in a better future

Note: The "18-23 law" the commenter mentions presumably refers to the 2025 rule letting men aged 18 to 22 leave.

I myself left Ukraine three months ago, I'm in Poland for now and have no clue what to do next. Yes, it's quiet here, no shelling (I'm from Sumy district, I have something to compare with), but damn, something's off🫠 […] I've even started to understand that phrase "home is better" a bit, and right now I'd gladly be back in my village near the city, but there are lots of buts... […] For now I'm seriously thinking of travelling a bit and going back to Ukraine, because there would actually be quite a few pluses to that too

And now, after all the fuckery inside, NABU, Fedorov, I just earn as much as I can, which is why I'm still sitting here, so that later I can go to some normal country instead of slaving away in some Poland or Germany.

"Economic reservation" (a paid draft deferment)

    OP

I came across a podcast with Andriy Onistrat, who describes himself like this: I am Andriy Onistrat, a soldier, banker, lecturer, motivational speaker, Ironman and entrepreneur. […] The point: he proposes a reservation model at $1,500 a month per person on top of all existing taxes. […] Personally, I am in favour. […] But seriously, the state is catastrophically short of money for everything. There is no pay rise for soldiers; what is more, I keep hearing that soldiers buy diesel and petrol with their own money, sometimes the rest too. […] According to Fedorov, 2 million people in Ukraine are wanted for evading mobilisation. […] If even 5%, one in twenty, of the categories above want to and can legally "buy themselves out" for 65,000 hryvnias a month, we get $1.8 billion a year. […] Win-win-win: soldiers get their long-awaited raise, the state gets an economic boost as people come out of the shadows, people get a reservation. What could go wrong))?? […] At the same time, I personally have been looking, and still am, for legal ways to avoid the draft, and economic reservation seems to me the most socially useful option, better than getting another degree or working somewhere you would never go otherwise just because it comes with a reservation, let alone any form of bribery. Yes, I have an official reservation, but its social benefit right now is close to zero.

Note: "Бронювання/бронь" (reservation) is the exemption from mobilisation that an employer can obtain for a worker. Onistrat is a Ukrainian banker and public figure. $1,500 is about 65,000 hryvnias.

I have supported it and hoped for it since 2022. But in four years nothing was done. And now they suddenly remember it, I wonder why? It looks like the only reason is to "shake down" the suckers one last time. […] It is just that a reliable buyout costs not $1,500 but $150,000. For the "elite" that is not much money. […] Where there is demand there is supply. And since no official economic reservation was ever introduced, all the money went to those offering crafty schemes.

So the gentleman proposes legalising state racketeering? Note: ГУР is the defence ministry's intelligence directorate, СБУ the Security Service of Ukraine. "Beaver" is slang for someone with money to squeeze.

Wouldn't it be better to save for six months to a year and buy a pass to freedom from the border guards? Or, say, a disability status (the meagre benefits would even slowly pay the money back)? Or a fictitious job with a reservation for much less, or a student card? Mostly, almost everyone with an income of even $1,500 to $2,000 a month did that long ago. I don't think this kind of racket by the state will work..

Maybe something like this would work in the Baltic states or Poland, but not in Ukraine. There is already a textbook example: OnlyFans models who paid their taxes, and then the racketeers, the police, the SBU and others came for them. This would be a database of people who can pay that $1,500. The data will have to be kept up to date, and at hour X the database might "freeze", or something goes wrong, and they will be milked locally in the bus or at the ТЦК.

Note: ТЦК: territorial recruitment and social support centre, the conscription office. The "bus" is the van in which recruiters take men off the street.
    8. ue43●●●

Some Marisha from Wrocław thinks you should go to the front and hand your money and your job over to her. Half the country is Marishas like that, so dreams of economic reservation will stay dreams.

Note: Wrocław is a Polish city; the jab is at Ukrainian women abroad.
    9. u27u●●●

Here the ТЦК created a serious problem themselves: "ТЦК" impostors appeared, guys decided to earn a bit, bought military uniforms, got hold of a bus somewhere, and drive around town catching suckers... so no deferment or reservation will save you if there is an urgent need for money. My recent encounter with the ТЦК happened without body cameras and without police present... A reservation here is useless

    10. u1kq●●●

There will be no economic reservation, because the partners will give money, but they won't give 30,000 mobilised men a month, that's all the maths there is. More likely they will cut deferments and reservations

Note: "Partners" means Western donor countries.
    11. ub9f●●●

So, a preliminary summary of this discussion, such as it is: 1. Commenters in this thread are unanimously against economic reservation. 2. Commenters did not offer a single scenario for legalising the 2+ million people who are wanted, nor a scenario for raising soldiers' pay. […] 4. The only real argument against economic reservation is that it is unethical towards serving soldiers.

Note: Posted by the thread starter.
    12. u3im●●●

Sadly the idea is already two years old. Economic reservation should have been done at least in 2024, when those lousy abductions of people and the closing of the western borders by "Yagoza" were just beginning. Now there is no point, because those who could have already sorted it out, fled or hidden, and those who couldn't are in slavery/the army/the madhouse. Right now the main idea of all these analysts and politicians should be achieving peace and stopping the war, not arguing about reservations.

Note: "Abductions" refers to forced street mobilisation. "Yagoza" is a derisive nickname; the post does not say for whom.
    13. u14t●●●

Our current government is against it. Because they are fundamentally incapable of working within the law. Without unwritten rules and backroom fixing, the very legitimacy of the "guarantor of the pause" would be shaken. I know a former soldier who was discharged lawfully but without visible injuries (limbs in place, internal injuries). He says he can't walk the streets freely because of the ТЦК. To pay 1.5k a month there has to be at least some guarantee that you won't still have to buy your way out of the bus later, and there is none

Obviously a rule like "pay XXXXX a month and you don't have to go and die" will be seen as unfair by most of the population (except those who have that XXXXX); it will simply lead to mass protests and another Maidan. […] So one could use a selection method that does not favour people by any criterion, i.e. random, a lottery.

Yet the rule "if you have a willy you go and die, if you don't you don't" somehow isn't considered unfair by half the population, heh

If someone wants to pay $1,500 a month to somebody for a promise not to be mobilised by bandits without insignia in little buses with Euro plates, let that "somebody" be me. I can promise you even more than that!

Note: Original in Russian. "Euro plates" means cheap cars imported on foreign plates.

And how do you decide the amount? Why not $500 or $5,000? Would you be in favour if the price were $7,000? I think not. For the same reason there will be people for whom $1,500 is too much

I reread the article and the comments, and the author's position sounds to me like: "let me officially pay an amount convenient for me (not too cheap, so that some Vasyl from the village can't pay it, but not too big, so I don't have to sell my last shirt)", dressed up as concern for the budget, the military, society, the state (underline as appropriate), sorry for the bluntness. […] reality has shown that the state, in my opinion, doesn't care who catches a glide bomb in the trench, an engineer with 15 years of experience or a barista with one month (just for comparison, with all respect to baristas). […] So the question remains: why would the state offer legal economic reservation if what it needs is people?

Note: КАБ: Russian guided glide bombs.

It is pointless to deny that I don't want to go to war and am looking for ways to get a reservation officially. Right now I have one, but whether I'll have it tomorrow is an open question. […] At the same time, I am not just looking for a way to "fix it", otherwise back in '22 I would have bought a fake disability or guardianship over some abstract second cousin's grandmother, or simply, following the Beaver's script, fled for cash to Tenerife or wherever he is now. […] The method isn't ideal, but from a "technocratic" angle it at least offers something.

Note: Posted by the thread starter. "The Beaver" seems to refer to someone accused of corruption who fled; the post does not say who.

Here comes Ukrainian maths. Collect 65,000 hryvnias from 2 million people, give 6,500 to 1 million. About the rest of the money, keep quiet. […] You could say it more simply: you don't see any meaning, for what or for whom you should give up your health and life. […] A certain organised group built a system in which 2 million people ended up outside the law and forced to hide just to survive!!!

🔴 The reservation rules are being rewritten. There will be fewer reservations, and it won't be your ministry deciding […] 1️⃣ Defence industry and energy: today 100% of staff can be reserved, it will be 85% at most. Heating, water utilities, waste: from 75% to 60%. […] 3️⃣ A Coordination Centre appears under the Cabinet: 17 people from the SBU, military intelligence, foreign intelligence and the National Police. Without its recommendation, no "critically important" status and no limit above 50%. It can also recommend taking the status away. No deadlines, criteria or appeals. […] "Workers with deferments (students, carers, fathers of three) no longer count" — this will in fact break the whole system; someone skipped maths class: who will register officially and work without a reservation so that others can be reserved ))

Note: The poster is relaying what was described as a leaked government draft (around 9 October), not an official announcement. The share of staff a company can reserve is calculated on its registered employees without deferments.

The pace of "hidden" mobilisation in Russia is increasing, and it will probably soon become open, with busification (the relevant drills were held back in summer). Our government is responding by revising the reservation criteria to recruit more mobilised men. So economic reservation never existed and certainly won't now. Though all this is a bit depressing. Btw, this is already the third thread like this. But no other options are visible on the horizon.

Note: "Busification": slang for forcibly mobilising men by bundling them into vans.

Economic reservation exists and always has, just with "local specifics" (a corruption component); you could call it a national trait... If you have money there are 100,500 ways to avoid mobilisation. And it isn't that expensive for an IT person. Basically everything in our state has to have a corruption component; that is the basic condition of our leadership in every era: running and protecting schemes and deals, that is what everything here rests on, the whole vertical.

Note: "100,500" is a stock exaggeration meaning "countless".
