Total fertility rate
Total fertility rate (TFR)
The average number of children a woman would have over her lifetime. Developed countries need about 2.1 to keep the population from shrinking across generations.
The total fertility rate adds up the year's birth rates for women of each age to estimate how many children a woman would have in her lifetime. Because some infants and children die, developed countries need roughly 2.1 for each generation to replace itself.
Taiwan's total fertility rate was 0.695 in 2025, down from 0.885 a year earlier. The National Development Council's August 2026 projection expects it to fall to between 0.62 and 0.66 in 2026.
