Death of Nahel Merzouk

Mort de Nahel Merzouk · also Nahel, 2023 French riots

A 17-year-old shot dead by a police officer during a traffic stop in Nanterre on 27 June 2023, which set off riots in several French cities.

Nahel Merzouk was a 17-year-old of French and Algerian descent. On June 27, 2023, he was shot dead at close range by a police officer during a traffic stop following a chase in Nanterre, in the Hauts-de-Seine department; two other teenagers, aged 14 and 17, were in the car. Riots broke out in several French cities after the incident.

Discussions in October 2026 often drew comparisons with 2023; for example, one Mastodon post said more high school students had been arrested over school blockades than during the 2023 riots.
